The wall is stocked to answer questions, not to move inventory
We hold no exclusive agreement with any manufacturer, no house-label heads, and no monthly volume target. Every component on the rack earned its place by being useful in a session — and several get pulled off the rack each year for failing that test.
How something gets onto the wall, and how it comes off
A shaft or head enters the test rack when there is a gap in what we can offer — a bend profile we cannot currently produce, a weight class we are thin in, a head with a centre of gravity position nothing else on the rack matches. Not because a rep visited, and not because a tour player put it in play.
Once it is on the rack, it accumulates a record. We keep count of how often each component ends up in a final recommendation and how often it survives the confirmation block after looking good early. Anything that goes a full season without being specced for anyone is taking up space that a more useful option could occupy, and it gets removed.
This means our inventory is unusual in places. We carry more mid-weight steel iron shafts than most shops and fewer ultralight driver shafts, because that is what walks through our door in central Indiana. We would rather be deep where it matters than shallow everywhere.
If the right answer for you is something we do not hold, we say so and we order it in. That happens perhaps twice a month and it has never cost anybody extra.
Where breadth actually changes an outcome
Depth in the right places beats a token example of everything. These are the areas where a wider selection genuinely changes what we can recommend.
Mid-weight iron shafts
The 100 to 120 gram band is where most of our iron work lands, and small steps within it change strike consistency noticeably. We hold that band in fine increments rather than in three jumps.
Driver bend profiles
Six distinct families rather than fifteen near-duplicates. The goal is to be able to produce any reasonable loading behaviour, not to display a large number of logos.
Wedge grinds
Multiple sole geometries per loft, because bounce interacts with central Indiana turf and with your attack angle in ways a single grind per loft cannot address.
Grip sizing
Four core sizes plus tape build-up in measured wraps. Grip size affects hand action more than most golfers believe, and it is the cheapest variable in the building to change.
Putter configurations
Head shapes across the toe-hang range, four shaft geometries, and adjustable length and lie test heads so the numbers come from a real club rather than an estimate.
Left-handed stock
Smaller than the right-handed rack, as everywhere, but every category is represented. A week of notice lets us bring in specific heads that are not held locally.
The incentive structure is the product
Any fitting studio can buy two launch monitors. What is harder to copy is an arrangement where nobody in the room earns more by recommending one component over another. Our fitters are salaried, they take no commission on components, and the build fee is identical regardless of what goes into the club.
That is not a moral claim. It is a structural one. If you cannot verify a fitter's judgement directly, the next best thing you can do is check whether they had a reason to be wrong. Here, they do not.
It is also why we publish the component cost. A studio that blends fitting, components and labour into one number has removed your ability to audit any of the three.

If you found a shaft cheaper online, or you already own a head you want built to a new spec, bring it in. Desmond will build it at the standard labour rate and it will get the same tolerance check as anything else that leaves the room. We will not sulk about it.
