Fitted off the deck first. The tee comes later.
Nearly every fairway wood sold is chosen from tee shots, and nearly every fairway wood that ends up unused was bought that way. We reverse the order, because the shot that decides whether the club earns its slot is the one from a tight lie with 230 to go.
A tee shot hides everything a fairway wood can get wrong
On a tee, the ball sits above the ground, the sole never touches anything, and a wood with entirely unsuitable sole geometry will produce numbers indistinguishable from a well-matched one. Head size, leading-edge shape, sole camber and bounce are all invisible under those conditions.
Off the deck, every one of those variables becomes measurable through strike location and dispersion. A wood with a wide, flat sole that drags on soft spring turf shows up immediately. So does a leading edge that catches on the firm, thin lies central Indiana produces by late August.
So the session runs deck first, at least two-thirds of the accepted strikes, across both the mat and the natural turf tray. Tee shots come at the end and confirm rather than decide.
This is also why the fairway wood session and the driver session are not interchangeable, and why fitting them at the same appointment usually shortchanges the wood.
What we change, and why in that sequence
Loft, before anything else
The single largest determinant of whether the ball leaves a real lie cleanly. We start higher than most golfers expect and work down only if the launch data supports it. A 3-wood that produces a lower peak height from the deck than your 5-iron is not doing a useful job.
Sole geometry and head size
Width, camber and leading-edge radius, tested across mat and natural turf. Shallow-faced heads generally get the ball up from thin lies more easily; deeper faces reward a golfer who genuinely sweeps it. The capture tells us which one you are, rather than which one you think you are.
Shaft weight and profile
Fairway wood shafts are frequently left at whatever the head shipped with, which is a mistake. Weight affects strike location on a club where strike location matters enormously, since the face is small and the sweet spot is low.
Length, usually shorter
Stock fairway woods are long. Half an inch off routinely tightens the strike pattern enough to gain distance despite the small speed loss, and it makes the club far more usable from an awkward lie.

The gap above and the gap below decide the loft
A fairway wood exists to fill a distance band, and that band is defined by the two clubs on either side of it. Fitting the wood in isolation produces a club that is genuinely excellent and lands within eight yards of something else in your bag.
So we capture the driver and the longest iron or hybrid at the start of a wood session even though neither is being fitted. It costs ten minutes and it changes the recommended loft more often than any other single input.
Golfers carrying two woods usually discover that one of them is redundant and that the redundant one is the 3-wood. Golfers carrying none often find that a 7-wood does a job their 4-iron has been failing at for years. Neither of those conclusions is available without the neighbouring clubs on the table.
